Gaye and John Armstrong were moved by the story of the Longtail fishermen, so much so they decided to hold a charity auction during August 2005 in aid of the trust at their pub, the White Horse in Ampfield, Hampshire. Being in an interesting part of Hampshire they had many unusual items on offer at the auction including a chance to drive a JCB, Kevin Keegans' track suit, a signed David Gower shirt, and the White Horse themselves offered to come and cook and serve dinner at the wining bidders home, to name but a few.
"We were thrilled at the generosity of our customers, especially the regulars who put up the auction items" explained Gaye Armstrong, she went on to say "we wish the fishermen every success with the boats and look forward to seeing the White Horse boats once they are built."
John Armstrong was particularly moved by the Eduardo's original story. "There was a lot of emotion in Eduardo's original report which really moved me. The idea of giving direct help to a specific project with a tangible end also appealed to myself and many of my friends. I can imagine the hardship the fishermen endure to earn very little by our standards, and I admire their spirit."
"I was touched by the warmth and generosity of the locals in Thailand after the tsunami, and have been equally moved by the kindness and generosity of people who have responded so kindly in the UK and other countries." said Eduardo. "The spirit of human nature is very much alive and I am very happy we can continue to support this cause long after the media has left. Although things are recovering well, there are still many fishermen desperate for boats, so our work is not yet done. I am very grateful to Gaye and John for honouring their commitment to support the fishermen, and congratulate them on raising this money."
