Western Union - August 2006 Update
The charity was approached a few months ago by a group of local fishermen who asked us to consider the purchase of a second hand trawler type fishing boat they had located off the South coast of The boat The "Chokpisol" was located in the Southern Thai The fishermen convinced us that they had 5 families willing to cooperate and share the boat and so after consulting The asking price was 400,000.00 Baht (approx USD 10,000). We negotiated it down to 350,000.00 (Approx USD 9,000) and after obtaining an official valuation and survey from the Marine Authority of Thailand, we acquired the boat including all the necessary equipment on behalf of the fishermen. The boat was delivered during July 2006 at a handing over ceremony presided over by Khun Chairat of the Longtial Boat charity, Khun Yai, the head of the fishermen who will operate it, and Khun Ji the owner. In addition a further 11 of the larger Longtail boats (worth approx USD 4,000 each) have now been completed and delivered as a result of Western Unions' generous donation. These boats have been supplied new with engines and basic equipment, and have all been delivered to their very grateful new owners. (Pictures of these 11 will be updated shortly.) With the balance of the Western Union donation we anticipate being able to order a further 12 large Longtail boats which we hope to have ready towards the end of September 2006 when we shall be organising a handover ceremony with representatives from Western Union, their employees and partners. This will make the total number of boats supplied 23 in addition to the Trawler. An excellent result and one everyone concerned should be very proud of.
